After five consecutive days of lengthy waves at the lefthand pointbreak of Chicama in Northern Peru, Lucca Mesinas (PER) was able to top the best South American surfers under the age of 20 and prevail at the 2014 Chicama Classic Pro Junior. Luan Wood (BRA) finished runner-up in his second straight Pro Junior Finals appearance. Miguel Tudela (PER) and Juninho Urcia (PER) obtained an equal third-place result.
"I'm so happy with this victory, especially since it happened here in Chicama, which is the paradise of lefts in my country," stated Mesinas. "The Final was very difficult and exhausting against the best surfers in the event. Everybody surfs so well and the current was so strong that you really needed to be in good shape. Luckily, I was able to find two good waves and win the title. I'm pretty emotional now and I just want to thank everybody for all the support I received during the contest."
Despite the overall Peruvian dominance throughout the competition, the conclusion of the event saw Silva crowned the overall ASP South America Pro Junior Series champion. Urcia was the last competitor capable of conquering the leading position, but he needed to win the contest to finish in first.
Results from the Chicama Classic Pro also determined which athletes would represent South America at the ASP World Pro Junior event in Ericeira, Portugal. With the rankings now solidified, Silva, Italo Ferreira (BRA), Wood and Urcia were selected. Filipe Toledo (BRA) and Lucas Silveira (BRA) are the two best-ranked South American surfers under 21 on the ASP Qualifying Series (QS), respectively, and will also participate in the event.
In the women's division, local surfer Miluska Tello (PER) lived up to expectations and became the event champion and the 2014 ASP South America Pro Junior Series champion with two victories in three events.
"I think this was the most difficult Final I've ever competed in," Tello said. "Vania (Torres) and I both got high scores on our first waves, so it all came down to our backup scores. I'm so happy with this victory and winning two events this year was the best thing that could have happened to me. Plus, I am very excited with the opportunity to compete at the ASP World Pro Junior event in Portugal."
Brazilian Yanca Costa will join Tello in representing South America at the ASP World Pro Junior event in Ericeira, Portugal. The event window for both contests in Portugal is October 25 to November 2, 2014.
