The junior women's division at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior has been narrowed down to four Semifinalists.
The initial heats of the women's division saw rankings leader Miluska Tello (PER) advance into Round 2, defeating Vania Torres (PER) and Paula Atucha (PER). Tello holds a slim lead in the rankings over Yanca Costa (BRA), who also advanced in her first heat at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior over Daniela Rosas (PER) and Adela Recordon (CHL).
"My heat was one of the first of the day. There weren't a lot of waves, and my wave selection wasn't the best either," Tello said. "Luckily, I qualified in first place and I know that I can do better in my upcoming heats."
On the second day of competition, Tello continued to campaign successfully. With the field down to the Semifinalists, five different competitors have a chance to win the championship on Saturday. Under immense pressure, Tello was taken to the hospital after suffering a panic attack. However, that did little to stop her from advancing into the Semifinals.
"I haven't felt good all week long," Tello said. "I'm still going to give it my best. I'd like to keep the title on home soil by winning the South American title and also qualify for the World Pro Junior event in Portugal."
The Chicama Classic Pro Junior will determine the surfers who will represent South America at the ASP World Pro Junior in Ericeira, Portugal. The four best surfers from the men's division and the top two surfers from the women's division according to the rankings upon conclusion of the event will qualify.
