Competition at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior began Tuesday with offshore winds and incredibly long waves in the 3-to-4 foot range (one meter) that would take athletes approximately 400 yards down the lefthand pointbreak of Chicama in La Libertad, located in Northern Peru.

On opening day of the event, which will ultimately decide the ASP South America Pro Junior titles, Ricardo Cruzado (PER) and Martin Jeri (PER) displayed local knowledge on the long, lefthand waves.

Cruzado scored the day's highest heat totals by earning a 15.85, a two-wave total that included a nine-point ride. Jeri also displayed his familiarity with Chicama's waves by netting a 15.75 to advance into the next round of the event.

"You don't have to hassle anybody in the water here because the waves come one after another and they give you plenty of scoring opportunities," said Jeri.

"The hardest part about today's conditions was trying to find a good one to rip on," he continued. "The waves are very long and you can do a bunch of turns, but they are also very physically demanding -- getting back up to the point can take up to 10 minutes. The best thing to do here is to catch a good wave, ride it in, head up the beach to the point and then catch another one. The level of surfing here is incredible and any of the competitors can win."

Over 90 athletes will be competing this week at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior at one of the world's premiere pointbreaks. A total of 68 surfers in the men's division and 21 surfers in the women's division will be battling to see who will clinch the ASP South America Pro Junior title and will determine who will qualify for the ASP World Pro Junior event to be held later this year.

Notable athletes under the age of 21 at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior include Deivid Silva (BRA) and Italo Ferreira (BRA), who lead the 2014 ASP South America Pro Junior rankings after the Red Nose Pro Junior event held in Baia Formosa, Brazil. The 2013 ASP South America Pro Junior champion Luan Wood (BRA) and the event runner-up, Juninho Urcia (PER) are also in attendance.

Although the men's title will be decided after only two events, the women's division will be commencing the third and final event of the 2014 ASP South America Pro Junior Series. The first event was held in San Bartolo, Peru and saw Miluska Tello (PER) come out victorious. Yanca Costa (BRA) won the second event over Larissa Santos (BRA) at the Red Nose Pro Junior competition in Brazil, but Tello remains at the top of the rankings. Competition will be fierce as the continent's top Pro Junior surfers round up their campaign for the championship title.
