Despite strong winds and a decreasing swell, competition on Day 3 of the Chicama Classic Pro Junior saw the best South American surfers under 20 continue to display remarkable performances at the lefthand pointbreak of Chicama in Puerto Malabrigo, Peru.
Current rankings leader Deivid Silva (BRA) established the highest scoring heat total of the event by earning a 17.85 two-wave total in Round 3. In addition, Italo Ferreira (BRA), who is also in the hunt for the Pro Junior title, kept his hopes alive as he easily advanced into Round 4.
Looking to defend his title, 2013 ASP South America Pro Junior Series champion Luan Wood (BRA) hit the water and exhibited his dominance as he advanced into Round of 16.
"I've been training here in Peru for the last few days, but the conditions here in Chicama are very unpredictable," claimed Wood. "I was paying close attention to the heats before mine, but when I paddled out I had to adapt because the tide changed and my initial strategy wasn't going to work out. I caught one good wave and even though I couldn't back it up with a good score I was able to make it into the next round."
Even though the Brazilian surfers have come out strong, the Peruvian surfers continue to compete at an extremely high level and remain the majority at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior. However, the only surfer from Peru that is still in pursuit of the title is Juninho Urcia (PER). After finishing runner-up in last year's competition, Urcia is hoping for a victory in his homeland.
"Too much wind and too little waves definitely made it hard to get good scores," Urcia said. "I thought it was the right choice to put the contest on hold until tomorrow (Friday). I'm ready to hit the water and I hope conditions will be better than they were today."
The Chicama Classic Pro Junior will conclude on Saturday and will decide the ASP South America Pro Junior Series champions, determining the top four men and top two women who will participate in the ASP World Pro Junior event to be held later this year in Portugal.
A call is set for 7 a.m. local time in Chicama for continuation of the Chicama Classic Pro Junior. The contest will be broadcast LIVE at www.olasperu.com.
