Despite a small decrease in swell size, Deivid Silva (BRA) and Italo Ferreira (BRA) were able to emerge victorious in their respective heats as competition resumed at the Chicama Classic Pro Junior.
With the elimination of Israel Junior (BRA) and Alcides Neto (BRA), who each received an equal-third finish at the Red Nose Pro Junior event in Brazil, both Silva and Ferreira will need to defeat Juninho Urcia (PER) before claiming the 2014 ASP South America Pro Junior title.
The standout performer of the day was local surfer Miguel Tudela (PER), who obtained a near-perfect 9.75 en route to an excellent two-wave total of 17.75. Tudela drew attention this year by reaching the Final of Pro Junior competitions at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California and at the Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France.
"Today was a very long and exhausting day," Tudela said. "Surfing a heat here in Chicama is equal to surfing 10 at any other beach. I'm really happy that I was able to advance with such high scores. I got those two good ones early on, so that got me more relaxed during the heat.
"In Chicama," he continued, "you need to pick your waves carefully, because if you don't catch a good one, you're going to lose a lot of energy paddling against the current. A lot of the foreign surfers aren't used to waves like this, so I think a Peruvian is going to win the event."
Alongside Tudela, fellow countryman Joaquin Del Castillo (PER) was the only other Peruvian to advance in competition. Despite lacking local knowledge, eight out of the 10 heats completed today were won by Brazilian surfers, including Renan Perez, Gabriel Andre and Madson Costa.
"This is my first time here to Chicama and the waves are incredible, but very hard to compete in," said Costa. "Today they were a little smaller than yesterday, so you have to choose wisely or else you lose a lot of time.
"The conditions here are very physically demanding because you have to race up the beach to get back up to the point. Everybody is surfing really well and I hope to make it to the Finals."
