"Italo is a tough opponent in any heat and he's been awesome all contest long, so I knew that I had to do my best in the Final," Silva said. "He rips and he was surfing in front of his hometown crowd. We've had several good heats against each other in Brazil and in other countries, so I'm stoked to have won such an incredible heat with the highest scores in my career. I'm coming off a pretty serious knee injury, so winning this contest is the best feeling ever."

For his efforts, Silva was rewarded with US$5,000 in prize money and 1,000 ranking points, putting him at the top of the ASP South America Men's Pro Junior Series rankings. The final and decisive event for the ASP South America title will take place in Chicama, Peru, September 16-20.

Despite not winning the Red Nose Pro in front of his hometown crowd, Ferreira was still pleased with his result.

"I would have loved to have won this event here at home, but it just didn't happen," said Ferreira. "Deivid surfed incredibly all event long. I made a couple of mistakes during the Final and that made all the difference.

"My next step is to compete in a few QS events and I'm happy with my result here. The waves were great and they showed Pontal's potential for holding major events here. I'll definitely be going to the Pro Junior event in Peru so I can achieve my goal of qualifying for the ASP World Pro Junior event."

In the women's division, Yanca Costa (BRA) took control of the Final, defeating Larissa Santos (BRA) on the long righthanders.

"It feels unbelievable that I won this event in Baia Formosa," said Costa. "Pontal is all about the rights, and I love surfing rights. I caught two good ones and I never thought that when I came over to compete in the Pro Junior I'd actually win the event! I surf against Larissa all the time and we're great friends. Now I'm going to give my all in Peru to try and become the South American champion."

Santos had been a standout performer throughout the women's competition, but was unable to find high-scoring waves in the Final.

"Yanca is a humble person and definitely deserved the win," said Santos. "I'm still happy with how I finished the event and that's what competition is all about; sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. So I'm stoked with how everything turned out."

The 2014 ASP South America Red Nose Pro Junior event is presented by Red Nose and is approved by the ASP South America regional office as the second event in the ASP South America Pro Junior Series.
