The Mother City will host the fourth City Surf Series event, the Jordy Smith Cape Town Surf Pro pres by O'Neill, running from June 15-17 and using a mobile event format to find the best waves on the Cape Peninsula. There are QS 1,000 and JQS 1,000 men's and women's divisions at the tournament, and the cream of South African surfing, along with a host of international surfers, have entered this event.
Tubewave is a classy Cape Town wave and a great venue for the Jordy Smith Cape Town Surf Pro pres. by O'Neill. - WSL / Thurtell
Cape Town is always a popular event among the surfers, and with the mobile venue format, competitors are guaranteed the best waves of the day from a wide variety of options. Last year the contest ended up at Melkbosstrand as the Peninsula was engulfed in massive surf and the only sheltered wave was Tubewave in Melkbos. The event was a huge success for a number of reasons, including the previously-mentioned healthy foreign contingent, great waves and the presence of event sponsor and Championship Tour surfer Jordy Smith.
The QS Men's division was won by Brazilian Alex Ribeiro from compatriot Marcos Correa in a one-sided affair, with Ribeiro way out front and Correa needing a combination of waves at the final siren.

In the Women's QS 1,000 the dominant Zoe McDougall from Hawaii took the honours, ahead of Camilla Kemp from Portugal. The only South African to get into the top four places in the event was Nicole Pallet, with Reika Noro from Japan tied with Pallet in third place. The Women's event was also featured plenty of international surfers, with Australia, Basque Country, Japan, Hawaii, Portugal, Great Britain and South Africa all representing on the final day.
Local J-Bay surfer Joshe Faulkner turned on in the long right-handers that were consistently pouring through on Finals day, and won the JQS 1,000 from Brazilian Joao Chianca in second, Liam O'Brien from Australia in third and his brother Angelo Faulkner in fourth.
The Women's JQS 1,000 was yet another division in this exciting event that had a majority of international competitors getting the results. It was won by natural-footer Sophie Fulton from fellow Australian Pacha Luque-Light, with McDougall coming in third and with the lone South African Sophie Bell surfing a low-scoring heat and ending up in fourth place.
The forecast for this weekend's event is looking promising for the show to return back to Tubewave in Melkbosstrand, at least for the opening day. Another giant west swell is forecast to pummel the peninsula on Friday, before subsiding somewhat on the weekend. Contest organisers will most likely kick off back at Tubewave and get the contest off to an early start.
Jordy Maree is currently ranked second on the WSL Africa QS ranking, and comes into this event hungry for a big result. - WSL / Thurtell
In the Men's QS 1,000 we have the usual suspects like South Africans Matthew McGillivray, Jordy Maree, Adin Masencamp and Dylan Lightfoot joined by the foreign crew of Dylan Groen from Germany, Brian Jean Patrice Furcy from Mauritius, Jordan Lawler from Australia and Luke Gordon from USA.
In the Women's QS 1,000 we have the 2004 world champion in Sofia Mulanovich from Peru surfing the event. At 35 years of age, Sofia is the oldest surfer in the event, but these days one just has to look at the ultra competitive Kelly Slater to realize that there is no age limit to professional surfing these days. Pacha Luque-Light from Australia is also returning in a bid to improve on her runner-up slot last year.

In the Men's JQS there is likely to be a tight hussle between the South African kids like Luke Slijpen, Eli Beukes, Max Elkington and Calvin Goor, but they will be chased down by Eduardo Motta from Brazil, Jolan Bonelli from Reunion, Hinata Aizawa from Australia and Daniel Templar also from Brazil.
