Competition got underway Friday at the inaugural 2014 ASP Qualification Series (QS) 3-Star Maui and Sons Women's Pichilemu Pro presented by Corona. Long lefthanders in the 3-4 foot range (1 meter) and moderate winds were on hand at the pointbreak in Punta de Lobos, Chile. By displaying a strong attack along the challenging waves, local surfer Jessica Anderson (CHL) put on a show with a series of connecting maneuvers to earn a 16.25 (9.25 + 7.00) for the day's highest heat total of the event.

"I'm so excited to hear that I got the highest score of the day," said Anderson. "The waves are really good for doing a lot of turns and I was able to connect them all the way inside. It's been an incredible day, but the currents are very strong. This contest is a great chance for us Chilean surfers to compete at home. I've been participating in the QS events this year, but this is a very important contest to get points to move up in the world ranking."

By making it into the Quarterfinals at the Pichilemu Pro, Anderson has earned 316 points and has already moved up nineteen positions from 89th to 70th on the ASP Women's QS rankings.

Earlier in the day, Josefina Ane (ARG) showed that she is worthy of securing a strong result after exhibiting precise surfing in her victories in Round 1 and 2. Ane guaranteed a spot in the Quarterfinals after obtaining a 15.50 (out of 20 points) over Natalie Escobar Diaz (CHL) and Monik Santos (BRA) in Heat 1 of Round 2.

"I'm so happy that I won both heats today," Ane said. "Getting good waves and surfing well has given me a lot more confidence. "In Argentina, there aren't a lot of quality waves or big waves like there are here in Chile. But I always train hard and do a lot of preparation on my technique so I'm ready for when I compete. That's helped me out here because the currents are so strong and I needed to paddle the entire time to win the heats."

Dax McGill (HAW) was the only other surfer to win both heats on Friday and will now face Trinidad Segura (CHL) in Heat 3 of the Quarterfinals for the final day of the ASP 3-Star Maui and Sons Women's Pichilemu Pro.

"My second heat was a lot more difficult because I couldn't find any good waves," she said. "Luckily, I found one at the very end that opened up and it got me the win. The water is really cold and the current is very strong, so you've got to be physically prepared to surf in these kinds of conditions, and I like that. I hope to continue surfing well tomorrow (Saturday) and keep making heats because I want to increase my points on the QS rankings."

A call is set for 9:30 am (local time) to assess conditions for the completion of the Maui and Sons Women's Pichilemu Pro presented by Corona. In Heat 1 of the Quarterfinals, Ane will face Pomare Tepano (CHL), followed by Anderson vs. Natalia Escobar Diaz in Heat 2. The remaining Semifinalists will be determined by the results of the clashes between McGill and Trinidad Segura, and concluded in Heat 4 with of Lorena Fica (CHL) and Adela Recordon (CHL).
