From November 13-16, 2014, Chile will host the Maui and Sons Women's Pichilemu Pro, marking the first time the break at Punta de Lobos will crown a women's event champion. The event has been approved by the ASP with three stars due to the amount of capital distributed -- a total of U$20,000 -- and the amount of points competitors can earn toward their Qualification Series (QS) ratings.
Punta de Lobos was named by the Save the Wave as an international natural reserve for surfing, as well as the Chilean surfing capital, which makes this spot a special and unique place to host this kind of competition.
Surfing is a sport that has been experiencing a boom in South America. Because of this, the ASP has decided to run the culmination of the 2014 QS season in Chile where there are a great number of excellent surfers. Several competitors from Peru and Ecuador have already signed up and, from Chile, Jessica Anderson and sister Janelle have signed up as well. Additionally, Trinidad Segura (CHL), a Maui and Sons rider and the host of the event, said she will award two wildcards for young local surfers.
In addition to watching the competition, fans who attend will be able to participate in yoga classes, as well as watch a band play live music, among other activities designed for women. "The idea is for it to be more than just a sporting event," Segura said. "The purpose is not only for it to be a female event, but a family one as well.â€
