GIJON, Asturias - Spain (Tuesday, July 30, 2013) - Stop No.3 on the European Men and Women Junior Series, the ASP 1-Star Gijon Pro Junior shapes up to be yet another exciting four-day event for the best under-20 surfers Europe counts. While anticyclonic systems are still bringing the beloved Summer weather to all exposed coastlines of Europe, swells have found their way back to our shores and all conditions are met for a great event.
Men's and Women's regional rankings have just been shaken up following the completion of the second Pro Junior event in Sopelana and Diego Mignot (FRA) will assume the number one position coming in to Gijon.
The talented goofy-footer who grew up along the West facing coast of Mexico nurtured a progressive surfing repertoire and seems to have found his rythmn in 2013 attainning the semi-finals in the opening event of the season and winning the second stop.
Behind Mignot on the rankings sit an army of up-and-comers ready to step-in on the first occasion including Tom Cloarec (FRA), winner of the inaugural event in Royan, Andy Criere (FRA) super consistent and waiting on his big break, Ian Fontaine (FRA) and William Aliotti (FRA) closely followed by runner-up of the last event Italia's Leonardo Fioravanti.
"The first two events have been great," Rob Gunning, ASP Europe's Tour Manager stated. "Boys and girls have improved again and the level on tour is incredible. With so many people being able to clinch an event win, the title race will be really tight and exciting all the way til the end of the season !"
In the women's, Reunion Island's Cannelle Bulard and Johanne Defay have taken an event win and a second place each and are both sharing the first place commanding position. Leticia Canales Bilbao (EUK) has collected two thirds already and will be looking to go all the way and claim her maiden event win when competition commences in Asturias. Finally, local rider Lucia Martino (ESP) currently in 7th position is the undeniable dark-horse in this competition where her local knowledge and hometown support advantage may help give her the push needed to advance into the final and onto the podium.
The inaugural Gijon Pro Junior will be webcasted LIVE from Friday onwards and offer the unique chance to the public to discover the coastal city of Gijon, the waves and activities in the area and most of all display the incredible level of performance our Top European Juniors have reached again this year.
The 2013 Gijon Pro Junior is scheduled from August 1-4, 2013 at playa de San Lorenzo, Gijon, Asturias-Spain. For all results, photos, video highlights, press releases and LIVE webcast, log on to aspeurope.com/gijon2013.
