The Caraïbos Surf de Nuit Anglet presented by Rip Curl has been called ON for this coming Sunday night, August 21, 2022, with festivities starting in the afternoon and the surfing action to get underway at dusk.
This epic, night-surfing contest has grown to be a crowd-favorite as surfers take on the lineup in the dark, aided by big light balloons and LED-covered boards provided by Action Glow, for a truly unique experience.
The entire action will be broadcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL Youtube channel and WSL Live Facebook page to provide great entertainment around the world.
A promising forecast calls for waves in the four-to-six foot range and light onshore winds. The competition should get underway around 9 p.m.
Event Format and Teams
This year the format continues to evolve, with 6 teams of 2 surfers battling it out in the Chambre d'Amour lineup. Each team of one man, one woman, will represent a brand or organization and fight to win prize money awarded in their name to the non-profit of their choice. The teams are as follows:
Representing the city of Anglet, Romain Laulhe and Pauline Ado have chosen to surf for Surfrider Foundation. Joan Duru and Maud Le Car will wear the Caraïbos colors and surf for Save La Mermaid. The Rip Curl team of Kyllian Guerin and Anais Blanchard will compete for Handi Surf.
Jorgann Couzinet and Leticia Canales Bilbao will be Team Soöruz and surf for the Water Family. Deeply will have Maxime Huscenot and Lucia Martino in the lineup surfing for Panasea. And the final pairing of Gatien Delahaye and Tya Zebrowski as Team Dakine will represent Ossegua.
The format is simple: two qualifying heats, an all-men heat and an all-women heat. Each surfer will keep only his or her best single scoring ride and they'll be added to give the team's heat total. The best 3 teams advance into the Final where all 6 surfers will share the lineup, once again counting only one wave each for the final ranking.
All the surfers will be in town early for a public signing session before the comp starts. They will all be fresh off performing at the Caraïbos Lacanau Pro just up the coast that wraps on Sunday.
Full Afternoon Fun Before Surfing Takes Over at Dusk
Movie screenings on a giant screen placed on the Chambre d'Amour jetty will start around 2 p.m, followed by a DJ set at 5 p.m on the roof of the Caraïbos Cocktail Club and the main gig with DJ Thoj, starting at 8 p.m and firing up the crowds during the surfing event.
