Setlist: Hurley & Swatch Pro
WSL
Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, is known as the home of progressive surfing. With consistent conditions and practically flawless waves, the so-called "skatepark of a break" plays host this month to the Hurley Pro at Trestles and the inaugural Swatch Women's Pro Trestles, marking the first women's WCT event there. Even if the trek to Trestles is too big to make, the tracks from ASP's broadcasts are all on tap:
Slightly Stoopid, "Anywhere I Go"
The fusion band from Ocean Beach, California, is familiar to a wide swath of fans, from those that dig post-punk acts like Sublime, to Deadheads and disciples of Bob Marley. Signed to Skunk Records while still in high school, Slightly Stoopid launched their own label just five years later, and have been grooving ever since. "Anywhere I Go" reveals the softer side of their SoCal sound.
Traumahelikopter, "Kids"
Dutch band members Mark Lada, Daan van Dalen, and Roel van Merlot grew up nowhere near the shores of Southern California. But with garage-rock riffs and a fast-paced, punk-inspired beat, traumahelikopter's songs suggest artistic ties to the sun-soaked region. "Kids" is a high-octane song for an high-stakes heat -- or a local surf session. Listen to their music here.
Black Bear Surf, "Geep Rangler"
Sitting somewhere between the other two bands is Black Bear Surf. Despite hailing from the landlocked, urban grounds of Nashville, Tenn., the band has embraced surfing and its symbolism. In a link on their site called "Ideology" they say: "Tasty waves, sunshine, and expanding our minds fuel our creativity. We provide honest, homegrown, independent music in a world saturated with sugar pop." With lines like "I just want to surf away," lyrics from ASP broadcast pick, "Geep Rangler," say it all.
