After two consecutive lay days, competition resumed at the ASP 3-Star Rip Curl Pro Stamina held at Playa Grande, in Mar del Plata, Argentina. By the day's end, a total of 12 Brazilian surfers qualified for tomorrow's Quarterfinals where the fight for top honors at the opening event of the 2014 ASP South America Series continues.
Former Brazilian WCT campaigner Jihad Khodr, who won the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Stamina, looked sharp winning both his heats today, clearly focused on a repeat championship.
“I was able to catch a good righthander and it kept me feeling confident throughout the heat,†said Khodr. “Conditions are really difficult, so you need to get lucky to find a good one. Everyone loves catching good waves, but it's important to have the ability to compete in any kind of conditions.â€
Italo Ferreira (BRA), put on the most impressive display of the day. Exhibiting an array of aerial surfing, Ferreira obtained a 9.90 for the event's highest single-wave score and complimented with the highest heat total with an 18.70.
“I really had an amazing day, I feel blessed,†said Ferreira. “I tried to throw huge maneuvers and I was able to land a few to get those great scores. The beach here at Playa Grande is real similar to the waves I surf at back in Brazil, so I think that helped out a lot. My dream is to make it onto the WCT, so I have to work hard to achieve it.â€
The only non-Brazilians to make it into the Quarterfinals are Dylan Lighfoot (ZAF) and Marco Giorgi (URY). Young Japanese surfer Reo Inaba is scheduled to compete in the final heat of the Round of 32 and commented on his performance thus far.
“I tried to stay farther away from my competitors and the waves ended up coming in my direction,†said Inaba. “I remained calm and I felt good because there are beaches in Japan that resemble Playa Grande. This is my first time to Argentina and I'm really enjoying the country, the people and the beautiful beaches.â€
The final day of competition of the ASP 3-Star Rip Curl Pro Stamina will be held on Sunday. The event winner will receive 750 ASP Qualifying Series points and 2000 ASP South America Series ranking points.
