Finals Set for Weekend Action at Pull&Bear Pantin Classic

The sun continued to shine on Day 4 as the Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro resumed in slightly smaller surf. Still, good three-to-four foot lefts and rights graced the long Pantin beach known as la factoria de olas -- the wave factory.

The day started with the men's Round Four where some of the strongest surfers so far continued to dominate, and made their way into the man-on-man heats of Round Five.

Among those who advanced, Josh Kerr , Nat Young, Marc Lacomare, Jesse Mendes, Jorgann Couzinet and Kanoa Igarashi will be the centers of attention when the event resumes.

Things escalated when the women hit the lineup again for their second round, with finals day rumored for Saturday. It's true that this event has a tradition of crowning men and women champions separately over the weekend.

Two full rounds -- 20 heats of the women's event -- were completed over the afternoon in great conditions, to keep only 16 surfers for finals day.

Of those 16, a few came across as potential threats for the event title, starting with Tatiana Weston-Webb . Tati, who's World No. 8 on the elite Championship Tour, comes from two runner-up results in Fiji and the US Open and fears no one, especially in Pantin where she's made the Semifinals before.

"I didn't mind waiting for better surf to get things going here, we're getting some of the best conditions right now," she said. "Confidence-wise I feel safe on tour but I'm backing myself up here. Regardless of the result I'm super happy to be here, supporting my boyfriend too and having a great time."

Today looked like a walk in the park for Dimity Stoyle as the Australian marched through the lineup and claimed two excellent scores to post one of the event's highest totals of 16.50 in her first heat this morning. She later confirmed her excellent form and advanced into the man-on-man Round Four.

"We're so lucky to have these waves," she said. "I've been surfing a lot down the beach and watching all the guys and getting excited! I'm surfing my favorite board that I just save for contests, I literally don't surf it at home. There are many waves out there that look good and it's hard not to take them, but you really have to focus on the bigger ones that have a good wall on them."

Pauline Ado, current World No. 13 on both the Championship Tour and QS, needs all the points she can get in Pantin, as well as a confidence boost heading into the next CT at Trestles. She launched her Pantin campaign with radical surfing on two great rights and posted a massive 9.17 and a combined heat total of 17.00.

"I wanted to stay busy and get a few scores quickly cause there are lulls between sets," she explained. "I was lucky to find those two scores, I didn't get much after that and for sure it's a great way to start your heat. I remember coming here when I was about 12 or 13 years old, sleeping in a van in the carpark, but since then the event has grown so much. Still I love coming back here, I love that's it's wild and beautiful."

Unfortunately Pauline was stopped in a wave-starved Round Three matchup with Bronte Macaulay and Paige Hareb later in the day.

The women will have a call at 11 a.m Saturday for their final day which should crown the event champion around 7 p.m. Men will have to wait until Sunday to resume their Galician title hunt.
