Surfers step up and rip excellent surf on second day of Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro.
The wave factory started pulsing three-to-five foot surf on Day 2 of the Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro with occasional bigger sets. The winds stayed decent, light onshore, and most importantly kept the ever-so-present Galician fog just distant enough to see the surfers in the lineup.
Competition resumed with the remaining heats of men's Round One before moving into the first twelve heats of Round Two. With bigger surf came bigger moves, and much bigger scores.
Yago Dora isn't one to look away when a big section presents itself and today he found a couple that were just begging to see some air time. Yago is currently in his best qualifying effort and ranked 7th in the world heading into the European leg which usually works well for him.

"That was a fun heat, watching conditions I realized the waves were really quick and if I got a closeout I might as well try to do an air or a big turn," he explained. "My strategy paid off, it's been flat for a week here so we're all psyched to get good waves today."
Willian Cardoso and Nomme Mignot on the other hand, stayed right on the wave face to drop their own big scores. Both surfers chose to stick to the lefts, but with Nomme on his forehand and Willian on his backhand.
Good first section, massive spray for Nomme. - WSL / Laurent Masurel
"Waves have improved a lot and I like it when there's a bit of size," Nomme said. "I knew that was a big heat and that I'd need to step it up with big turns but I managed to stay relaxed. I know I'm capable of surfing at that level and I really just needed to stay calm, take the right waves and try not to fall off."
Nomme got the nod on heat total, 17.20 over 17.10 but Willian nailed the highest single wave score of 9.43 for three massive backhand hooks.
A big open face is just a piece of cake for Willian. - WSL / Laurent Masurel
"The tide was super low and the swell pushed a lot, I was just blessed to get waves like that," he said. "I know my potential in surf like this and I just hope the waves keep pumping tomorrow. Everyone's ripping today and it's very nice to be back in Pantin with these waves."
In Pantin, some surfers are testing a new technology from the Galician Institute of Technology (ITG) to help measure their turn rate and torque, using a little box called ‘Flything' on the nose of their board. Willian was one of them, and we're curious to know what data was recorded on his best wave.
"I like testing new tools to improve my surfing," he continued. "I'm not sure how I did with my turns but I'll look at the numbers later and hopefully learn a thing or two about my heat."
Ian Gouveia qualified for the 2017 Championship Tour in basically three events last year, all in Europe. Sitting 25th on the CT right now, and at 203 on the QS, he's going to need some serious European mojo if he wants to stay on Tour. His first heat in Pantin was solid hopefully he can keep the ball rolling when the event is called on again.
Ian commits to a vertical section on a rare right. - WSL / Laurent Masurel
"Surfing on the CT is definitely a dream come true," he said. "It's been fun surfing those incredible waves but at the same time a bit tough trying to get results on the CT and the QS at the same time. This is the first heat I've made on the QS this whole season. Last year my season really started here so hopefully I can do it again. There's plenty of events left so I'm staying positive and confident."
Thursday morning's call will have the men ready for an 8:15 a.m start to complete the remaining twelve heats of Round Two and the women are on call around noon for one or two rounds of women's action.
