Brazilian small-wave whiz, Filipe Toledo, put down a nearly perfect 9.70 midway through his Round 1 heat (one judge even gave it a 10) at the 2017 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. But he had only just begun to lay the foundation for the day's highest heat total. In the dying moments, Toledo spun on a milky inside runner that stood up on the reef with a steep, smooth wall. The result? Round 1's sole perfect score.
