Get excited for the inaugural French event featuring Europe's Best U-18 surfers.
The inaugural Junior Pro Biscarrosse, Stop N°2 on the 2016 European Junior Qualifying Series approaches as the continent's top up-and-coming surfers converge to this exciting new location on tour.
Situated at the Northern end of the Landes department and right below the iconic Arcachon Bay, Biscarrosse is a vibrant surf town which like many of its coastal counterparts, goes from quiet winter chilly vibe to full-on touristic mode every summer. From April 28 - May 1, it will be the center of attention for all surf-enthusiasts as the next generation of talents take on the playful waves in the area.
The venue: surrounded by the lush pine forest and sitting between two massive fresh water lakes, Biscarrosse has got it all. The country side meets the ocean in Biscarrosse plage, where long white sand beaches produce excellent waves and a lonely surf session is just a short walk away.
"With its 9 kilometer stretch of beach, Biscarrosse is one of the most popular beach resorts on the coast," Alain Dudon, Mayor of Biscarrosse stated. "Tourists love the area, and so do water sports enthusiasts, that's why it has become so popular among surfers of all kinds. We are heavily invested in the support of the sport and are extremely happy to host the only French stop on the European Junior Qualifying Series. We wish these up-and-coming great surfers all the best in this competition."
In 2016, the WSL Junior Qualifying Series transitions to a new model with the age limit brought down to 18 years-old. An extremely talented field of athletes in Europe will this year take on several venues across the Old Continent with stops in Portugal, France and mainland Spain to culminate in the Canary Islands. The variety of conditions at each stop will help build these young surfers experience and nurture them into the professional athletes they aim at becoming.
"WSL is excited to add this new JQS event to our 2016 schedule," Rob Gunning, European Tour Manager stated. "The support from the city council of Biscarrosse has been crucial in getting the project up and running and we look forward to a long working relationship with them. Beautiful location with some excellent surfing conditions promises to make for a great first edition this May 1st weekend."
The series launched last month in Caparica - Portugal, and witnessed a mixed crew of familiar and new faces take on great conditions for the season opener, confirming if needed that the level of performance would once again raise to new heights in 2016. Thomas Debierre (GLP) and Teresa Bonvalot (PRT) emerged victorious and took an early lead on the rankings, leading the field coming into the Junior Pro Biscarrosse.
Finally, in addition to a US$2,000 check and the all-important JQS ranking points, the winners of both the men and women's divisions of this inaugural Junior Pro Biscarrosse will receive a wildcard into the upcoming second edition of the Pro Anglet this summer.
Surfers and event officials will first meet at 7:30AM Thursday for an early call and a possible 8AM start if conditions allow it.
