Best Aerialists to Compete at Night in Anglet
WSL
WSL is proud to announce the addition of the YNTHT Surf De Nuit pres. by SoWest Cola to the European specialty events list. The night air show is scheduled for Friday, August 14 at 9 p.m. local time.
The concept: Huge balloons filled with helium gas will light up the Chambre d'Amour beach where 12 surfers will compete in a best-aerial format. Their boards will also be lighting the scene with LED colored stripes on the decks.
"The Surf de Nuit,' which dates back to 1994, is an original concept developed here in Anglet. Traditionally, our Tourism Office has partnered with industry leaders and have made this event sustainable to keep it fresh and relevant for more than 20 years," said Claude Olive, Mayor of Anglet.
"All this hard work is now universally acknowledged and we're excited to have it featured in the World Surf League specialty events list," Olive continued. "We're very happy to welcome you all in Anglet on August 14, and look forward to seeing some of the best European surfers put on a great show once again."
The list of competitors has been announced, most are full-time WSL competitors:
Veminardi is the defending event champ and has been on a tear lately. Most recently he made it to Round 4 at the the Ballito Pro, a prestigious WSL Qualifying Series event. He'll lead the pack, looking to go back-to-back in Anglet.
"The night surf is firstly fun, but it is always a little challenging," Veminardi said. "Doing airs in the dark is not that easy even with floodlights all over the beach! I'm looking forward to the event and trying to defend my title."
Earlier in the day, visitors will also be able to enjoy and test some equipment in the event's village with the Shaperoom and Philips, as well as discover surf art in an exhibition area. The afternoon will then give way to a sunset concert by Dutch band Jack and the Weatherman, followed by DJ sets to accompany the main surfing event.
