The ASP Women's World Championship Tour (WCT) added three new destinations for 2014, raising the bar and allowing for further development in women's surfing. The Top 17 have already surfed famous breaks off Tavarua for the Fiji Women's Pro and their season will end in Honolua Bay at the Maui Women's Pro. But sandwiched in between is the rock-reef break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif., home to the first-ever Swatch Women's Pro Trestles.

"This is the one we've been waiting for," ASP Women's Tour Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer said. Clips of the Top 17 throwing airs and dropping into bombs had fans around the world frothing for more. Trestles, says Miley-Dyer, is where they'll find it.
"We've seen a lot on the internet when they drop clips of big airs and cool progressive surfing that hasn't been brought to the contest jersey yet," she said. "This wave suits that kind of surfing to a T. It's such a high-performance wave, that's where I expect us to shatter that contest-surfing boundary for progression for the women."
There has never been a women's World Title event at Lowers, though it did play host to a women's Qualification Series (QS) event in 2005. This makes the 2014 event significant. According to Miley-Dyer, all of the women on Tour have surfed Lowers -- a must-have on any Southern California surf itinerary -- on their own time with the typical crowds that flock to its perfect waves. But surfing it with just one other person in two-woman heats will be a first -- not to mention a surfer's dream.

"The big thing will not getting too excited and taking every wave," Miley-Dyer said. "There will be so many good waves in the lineup that you'll have to take a deep breath and pick a good one. It's not like the last time you surfed it when there were so many people in the water you took off whenever you could."
Having Lowers on the elite Tour has many implications. The Swatch Women's Pro comes at a crucial moment for the tight Title race between Carissa Moore (HAW), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), Tyler Wright (AUS) and Stephanie Gilmore (AUS).
"It's a really interesting point in the tour," Miley-Dyer said. "The timing of this event coming into Europe makes it really important to get a result. The fact that it's the first time going to Trestles and everything it represents, everyone will want to be know as the progressive surfer on tour. So if whoever wins will carry that momentum into Europe."
