There's a strong case to be made that the streak that World No. 1 Carissa Moore is currently enjoying started back in 2018 with her statement-making win at the inaugural Surf Ranch Pro.
Going into the Championship Tour's first freshwater stop, Moore was winless in 2018 and three years removed from claiming her last World Title. Self-doubt was creeping into her head. The question of "Will she win another Title?" was omnipresent.
Perhaps it was the new setting and new challenge of competing at the Surf Ranch for the first time, but Moore dominated the event leaderboard from the onset. After finishing first in the preliminary rounds earlier in the week she grabbed the lead and never let go, staying in the top spot for three straight days.
"It's such a new thing, it's such an honor to be part of this whole deal," Moore said at the time. "It's a wonderful canvas and really shows what kind of surfer you are."
The four-time World Champion just kept getting better, building her score line with two new excellent scores for a combined heat total of 17.80 (8.60 + 9.20) and the Surf Ranch Pro victory.
Moore set the pace straight out of the gates, posting an 8.33 on the left and a commanding 9-point ride on the right, accented by a huge carve on the end bowl. This put her atop the event leaderboard, a position she'd never relinquish.
"For me there's no pressure, I'm not in a title race, I'm just having fun," Moore explained. "I just want to have some really strong performances and gain some confidence."
Edging out Stephanie Gilmore on Finals day to take the win, for Gilmore's part in the action she landed in second-place, cemented her spot atop the WSL Leaderboard and would ultimately go on to capture her record-tying seventh World Title at season's end.
Meanwhile, Moore used the momentum she gained from the Surf Ranch to set up her own run at history. She'd go on to win the Beachwaver Maui Pro to close out the season and finish the year ranked a very respectable third.
In 2019, she won two more CT events and never finished worse than the Quarterfinals enroute to her fourth World Title -- which, so far, she is successfully defending as the Tour barrels into this year's Jeep Surf Ranch Pro presented by Adobe.
The Jeep Surf Ranch Pro presented by Adobe runs from June 18-20, 2021 in Lemoore, California. Don't miss a second of the action right here on WorldSurfLeague.com.
