Tropical Cyclone Lucas -- which has been spinning its way through the Coral Sea -- saw the famed sand-bottomed points on the Gold Coast come to life this week. And as if one cyclone wasn't enough, the swell was enhanced by a second weather system, Tropical Cyclone Ana, whose swell has augmented the lines generated by the closer Lucas system.
Long story short, the points were firing and every person who could beg, borrow or steal some time -- or was lucky enough to be a professional surfer -- was out there scrapping for a tube. The best waves (i.e. sand) seemed to be at Greenmount, but there were gems all the way from Snapper Rocks to Kirra.
On Friday it was big and the sets were washing through, but in between there was wave-of-a-lifetime potential if you could put all the pieces together, plus a bit of luck for good measure. The swell has been building all week, going from fun and ripable to the sort of Snapper-Greenmount-Kirra which can remind people quickly that, while they may look too perfect to hurt you, there's real consequences for coming unstuck at the wrong time.
Current Championship Tour athletes such as Macy Callaghan were out, as well as legends such as three-time World Champion Mick Fanning. Up-and-coming Aussie star Molly Picklum was absolutely shredding, as were dozens of others.
The swell is sticking around into the weekend, so keep your eyes peeled for the clips as they filter out. More to come...
