It's hard to imagine this, but just try. Try to imagine being the greatest Hawaiian surfer of your generation, being told by a bunch of haoles that you weren't allowed to surf your home events.
You'd surf, right?
Dane Kealoha did. So did others, but they weren't Dane. This was a world champion in waiting, placed in an impossible situation. Give up your pride because of pro surfing politics, or surf.
He surfed. It wasn't a great Pipeline day, maybe six feet with an early onshore seabreeze, but it was Pipe, and Dane won.
The others paid their fines. Dane refused to. A point of principle.
He never competed in a tour event again. But he's still a Pipe Master.
