During Pipeline's early years, we assumed that goofyfoots held a distinct advantage. That all changed at the 1975 Pipe Masters, when 20-year-old South African Shaun Tomson, along with cousin Michael and a handful of equally ambitious young Australians, laid down the blueprint for a whole new backside attack. And in a wild, 10-foot Pipe final, Shaun and his magic, Spider Murphy shape called the "Pink Banana" shattered the goofyfoot myth once and for all. Since then, the event's seen 30 regularfoot victories versus 15 from the goofies.
