Carve Pro at Maroubra Beach to continue to go from strength-to-strength in 2020
WSL
The Carve Pro will land in Maroubra Beach this January when it kick-starts the 2020 Australian World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) leg.
The elite four-day QS 1000 rated event will form the first of three stops on the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series and will take place in Maroubra Beach from the 29 January - 1 February 2020.
Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden believes the event will continue to serve as inspiration for the next generation of local Sydney surfers.
"The caliber of surfing at the Carve Pro has always been incredibly high and the local surfers who have competed over the years have always been met with a giant amount of fanfare," said Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden. "Locals like Monty Tait, Blake Thornton, Max McGuigan and Jackson Giles have all laid the foundation for Maroubra surfers like Koda Killorn, Tye Koolis, Jake Feher and Mateus Bersot to be able to compete and we think a lot of that strength has come off the back of this event."
Randwick Mayor Danny Said echoed similar sentiments and believes that the event is perfectly suited to the beach.
"I'm so proud to welcome a marquee event like the Carve Pro to Maroubra, which has been a National Surfing Reserve since 2006," said Randwick Mayor Danny Said. "It's a perfect match. People come from all over the world to surf the waves at Maroubra, and I know the local community can't wait to come out and support the event. It's a great chance to watch world-class surfing right here on our doorstep."
Carve Director Matt Whyte said he's blown away by the growth of the event since its inception as a Pro Junior event in 2014.
"Our upcoming Carve Pro QS1000 will be our seventh World Surfing League event held at Maroubra Beach," said Whyte. "Back in 2014 Carve launched our first-ever Pro Junior event which was a huge success. We backed that event up again in 2015. Carve then made a large investment in taking our Pro Junior event to a QS1000 in 2016. Our upcoming event in January will be our fifth Carve Pro QS1000. Carve is all about supporting our local surfing communities and creating a pathway for young surfers to fulfill their dreams of one day becoming a professional surfer"
WSL Australia / Oceania Regional Tour Manager Will Hayden-Smith added:
"The Carve Pro at Maroubra is the perfect event to kick of the Australian QS season," said Hayden-Smith. "The beach and the event has a lot of history and at that time of year can provide some epic conditions for the competitors. WSL would like to thank Surfing NSW, Destination NSW, Randwick Council, Carve and all of the other partners that make it possible to provide a platform for our athletes to compete on the world stage."
The 2020 Carve Pro will be proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The event will also be proudly supported by Carve, Vissla, Randwick City Council, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Souths Juniors, SouthEnd Hotel, Mothernest, Storage King, AirAsia, H2Coco, Ecosol, WSL, and Surfing NSW.
The Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series was developed for Australian and International surfers to gain ranking points and prize money on the WSL Qualifying Series. The series also creates a NSW coastal road trip for all to explore the variety of waves, visit local communities and enjoy NSW surfing culture.
