ASP is pleased to announce that Western Australia will play host to two Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) events this year - the Whalebone Classic and the Be The Influence Avalon Cup.
The inaugural Be The Influence Avalon Cup will run at Avalon Point, Mandurah from May 17 - 18, bolstering the amount of LQS events in Australasia, offering more opportunity for our growing crop of emerging longboarding talent.
"Surfing WA is really excited to add another ASP LQS event on the calendar," said Justin Majeks, Surfing WA's Event Director. "Longboarding has a large and passionate following here in the West, with some great talent including current WA's own Georgia Young who's been pushing the sport to a new generation."
2009 ASP World Longboard Champion Harley Ingleby - WSL
The Whalebone Classic will return for the 16th time and will be held at Cottesloe in Perth, the location where event director Peter Dunn found a washed up whalebone on the beach, inspiring the name for this iconic event. Dunn is thrilled to have this event return for another year and host a stellar local and international field of competitors at Cottesloe from July 11 - 13.
"The event's ability to attract a global field is impressive, but it's biggest achievement is what it has done for WA's junior surfing," Dunn said. "It has lifted the standard of junior surfers. You just have to look at the current back-to-back Australian Longboard champion Georgia Young."
Young, he points out, won the Classic in 2006 and went on to take back-to-back Australian Titles in 2012 and 2013 as a 24-year-old surfer. Dunn suspects she may be following in the footsteps of four-time Australian Longboarding champ Claire Finnucane. Finnucane has taken home 10 Whalebone titles."
