Pumping Surf for Opening Rounds of Deeply Pro Anglet

855 waves were surfed on a massive opening day at the QS1,500 Deeply Pro Anglet, for the first three rounds of men's action in pumping four-to-six foot surf.
Nearly 9 hours of competition were necessary to complete 40 heats running double banks, meaning the action was split on two peaks on either sides of the Chambre d'Amour break wall.
As dreamy as the lineup looked sitting comfortably on the promenade, conditions were tough to figure out and a lot of top seeds failed to capitalize on some of the clean lefts and rights on offer in Anglet.
Among the major names bowing out early were Timothee Bisso, the recent winners in England Leon Glatzer and Lacanau Marco Mignot as well as international surfers Te Kehukehu Butler and Noah Hill.
The biggest name of them all, current QS leader Jorgann Couzinet suffered a similar fate and couldn't advance past a very attainable Round 3 heat where all four surfers barely reached average scores.
On the other end of the scale and the other side of the pier, Eduardo Fernandes found near-perfection with an incredible 9.17 backed up with a 7.57. Couzinet's and Fernandes' heats ran simultaneously on either sides of the Chambre d'Amour break wall but the two surfers had very opposite experiences in the lineup.
"I was paddling back out and that left came out of nowhere so I was the only one in position," he said. "It just had three really good sections, an amazing wave to surf. I'm always stoked to surf well no matter the score but of course it's a plus. I surfed both banks today and they were both fun!"
Deeply pro rider Maxime Huscenot also advanced quite easily out of the third round and will join his teammate Vasco Ribeiro when the event resumes. Fresh off a Semifinal result up the coast in Lacanau, the Frenchman hopes to keep his momentum going into this week.
"The lineup is huge and there aren't that many waves that actually have a steep face," he said. "Some of them are pretty soft so you have to be on the right ones, there's always a little luck involved too. It's always tough to get right back into it here just after Lacanau, it's a long stretch of competition and pretty exhausting. I've always had better results in the first one but I'm feeling good this year so hopefully I can do well here."
When the QS1,500 action ended late this afternoon, and the tide was coming back up as the wind switched onshore, the Red Bull Airborne Qualifier launched and completed the initial four heats to determine the event's finalists.
16 surfers took it to the lineup to fight for a single winning spot into the Red Bull Airborne France, which will unfold during the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro France in October.
Brothers Nomme and Marco Mignot dominated the opening heats and qualified in first and second position respectively, putting on a show above the lip to score big. Judges rewarded commitment to the biggest ramps and we saw insane maneuvers sent, unfortunately without much luck landing most of the time.
The surprise came from Enzo Cavallini who pulled one of the biggest rotations for a 9.00 to take the lead heading into the Final of the event. Maxime Huscenot, Charly Quivront and Jordan Oueslati complete the lineup of six surfers who will fight for the win when the event resumes.
The Surf de Nuit Anglet was unfortunately cancelled late last night as a severe weather system made its way across the coast and rendered conditions too dangerous for both athletes and the public. The annual night surfing showdown attracts crowds in the tens of thousands and is a fan-favorite, transmitted live on the WSL platforms each year.
Competition could get back underway early on Tuesday morning with a 7:30 a.m call for the women's opening round while the men will come in around 10 a.m.
