Marco Mignot Pulls Last-Second Heroics, Eliminates Couzinet in Lacanau

The Caraïbos Lacanau Pro ran through the Quarterfinals today in difficult conditions with a strong onshore wind making waves tough to read for all competitors.
The day's major upset came in heat 2 of the men's Quarters, when Marco Mignot eliminated current Qualifying Series leader Jorgann Couzinet in the dying seconds of their matchup.
Couzinet has been the dominant force all-week in Lacanau, posting huge scores and dominating every heat he surfed, much like he started his Quarterfinal. With a solid 8.67 on his opening ride and a decent back-up, the Reunion Island surfer had a firm grip on the lead and time was dangerously running out for Mignot.
But with the wind being perfect on the rights, and Mignot's skills in the air, Couzinet was never out of danger and his worst nightmare came true when the young junior started on a bomb and rocketed into the sky. Mignot managed to control the rotation and keep his board under his feet, landed clean for a near-perfect 9.57, the highest single score of the entire event so far, to eliminate Couzinet and make the Semis.
"I knew that wave was out there and against someone as good as Jorgann I knew I needed to bring my A-game," he said. "He's super strong and I'm sure he's going to make it this year, and I'm stoked to be able to beat him once, it's a confirmation that I'm capable to rival with the best sometimes. I'm going to keep my head down and keep working to one day achieve my own dreams."
In other Caraïbos Lacanau Pro news, the women's final four will be international with an Australian, reigning event winner Zahli Kelly, a Hawaiian Gabriela Bryan, a German Rachel Presti and a French Maud Le Car.
Selyann Zouhir, Gatien Delahaye and Maxime Huscenot complete the men's final four. All surfers will be back at 1:45 p.m Sunday for the final call of the event.
