Zarautz Awaits Europe's Best to Close QS Spring Leg
Nicolas Leroy
The Cabreiroá Pro Zarautz Basque Country pres. by Oakley will soon conclude the spring leg of events across the Old Continent, here's everything you need to know!
What?
It's the fourth back-to-back edition of this event, but Zarautz has a long tradition of hosting professional surfing events in the heart of the Basque Country. Some of the world's best surfers have shone here, last in date was two-time WSL Champion Gabriel Medina who won a QS6,000 event back in 2011.
The territory has also produced great talents, like long-time Championship Tour surfer Aritz Aranburu and perennial QS threat Hodei Collazo.
This year, the Cabreiroá Pro Zarautz Basque Country pres. by Oakley will close an exciting spring leg of events that took longboard, junior and QS surfers to Portugal these past three weeks. Surfers will then have a long break before the region's major leg this summer to either recharge the batteries or go compete internationally.
Where?
Zarautz is a beautiful little town in the heart of the Basque Country, sitting halfway between Biarritz and Bilbao. The whole coastline is wave-rich and ultra consistent, well protected from the Southern winds and a lot of people travel over from the French Basque Country and Hossegor when the beachbreak are blown-out.
Spring is a brilliant season for this area and over the last three years, the event was graced with incredible conditions to crown the likes of Jorgann Couzinet, Gony Zubizarreta and Jonathan Gonzalez in the men, and Pauline Ado (twice!) and Carol Henrique in the women's field.
When?
Tune in from May 8-12, 2019 to watch the event LIVE and check out all the photos, videos and updates right here on worldsurfleague.com!
