Rookie Griffin Colapinto Takes Down Joel Parkinson
Anna Dimond
Wednesday at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, rookie Griffin Colapinto's giant-slaying freight train kept charging through Snapper, as he took down his second World Champion in just four days.
In his first-ever event as a member of the WSL Championship Tour (CT), the California surfer left the station Sunday by sending 2x, reigning World Champ John John Florence to Round 2. For Colapinto's fans, it was no surprise that the talented kid from San Clemente, Calif., was capable of such a feat. For Florence, however, it was a huge blow, as he was eliminated from the event -- at the hands of a wildcard -- in that next heat.
Wednesday, Colapinto continued his rout with a win over CT veteran Joel Parkinson. Not only was Parko a WSL Champion, in 2012, but he also grew up here in Coolangatta, and knows Snapper's righthand point better than most. Unlike the young grasshopper surfing against him, however, Parko said afterward that he was looking only for 10-pointers -- with, he said, no justice.
But in the end, the rise of youth is actually the essence of life's due process. Like 10-point waves that don't arrive when you want them, and 19-year-olds who steam-roll their elders in their first week on Tour.
Colapinto will surf next in Round 4, against Japan's Kanoa Igarashi and Australia's Julian Wilson.
