The Canary Islands archipelago is a breath of (lesser) fresh air in the European winter and has become the number-one destination for a quick surf escape to warmer climates. It also has a long tradition of hosting World Surf League events, and while a two-year hiatus had us almost forget about the gems found in the sun-soaked islands, the good news is the QS heads back there for the Las Americas Pro Tenerife next week!
European surfers catch a sunny winter break in Tenerife for Stop No. 2 on the regional Qualifying Series, the Las Americas Pro Tenerife.
Contests have run at beach breaks and slabs on Gran Canaria, point breaks on Lanzarote, but this time it's a classic A-frame peak on the southern tip of Tenerife that's about to host Europe's best.
The predominant left, which is surfed over boulders, produces a long, walled-up ride and room for multiple maneuvers. In other words, a perfect arena to display modern professional surfing at its finest.
Entries have poured in from some of the best male and female European surfers and up-and-coming talents, as well as a pool of local surfers wanting their piece of the action for QS1,500 points and prize money.
Jorgann Couzinet will lead the men's field as the number-one seed, and recent third- place finisher in Israel Nelson Cloarec will try to keep his momentum going. Plenty of other big names will join the fun in the sun, with the likes of Maxime Huscenot, Marc Lacomare, Gony Zubizarreta as well as local boy Jonathan Gonzalez.
The women's event will be the first of the season for European surfers within their region. Pauline Ado will lead the show, as the longtime Championship Tour surfer tries to re-claim a ticket for the elite tour. The reigning regional champion Carol Henrique, meanwhile, has a shot at further asserting her domination on the local scene.
The event will stream live right here from January 29 - February 4, and you'll also find all the photos, videos and updates.
