WSL Hawaii and Hurley Surf Club Host Youth Development Day
WSL
Ahead of the Hurley Surf Club Pro Junior, which will take place October 14 - 20 at Turtle Bay Resort, WSL Hawaii/Tahiti Nui and Hurley Surf Club joined forces to offer a youth development day at Pipeline that included a surf session, video coaching analysis, ginastica training with Kid Peligro and more.
Surfers enjoyed 2-foot-plus sandbar waves at Gums while Hurley videographers captured their session. Back on land, the replay was dialed across monitors in the Hurley Surf Club van and surfers got to learn key insight from professional surfer and Hurley team manager Joel Centeio. Athletes analyized wave for wave while Centeio broke down fundamentals like wave selection, footwork and competitive strategy. Former World Junior Champ and Hurley team member Mahina Maeda was also on hand to help coach the younger generation and give feedback on performance in the surf.
Attendees were treated to locally-made gelato from IL Gelato Hawaii to re-energize, then headed to Sunset Beach to work with master ginastica trainer Kid Peligro. Maeda switched gears from surfing to mat work and also helped teach alongside Kid and fellow competitive surfer Elijah Gates.
The Hurley Surf Club Pro Junior will feature 40 men and 20 women at Turtle Bay Resort's right-handed point break known as Pool Bars this October. The Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) 1,000-rated event will run in conjunction with the Turtle Bay Resort Pro, which features a Women's QS1,000 and a Men's and Women's Longboard QS1,000. WSL Hawaii/Tahiti Nui and Hurley Surf Club have teamed up to provide Hawaii's youth with year-round activations that include surfing events, junior development activations, movie nights and more.
