Thursday, August 31, 2017, will be a day not soon forgotten in the Qualifying Series (QS) with all-time Outer Banks swell on hand. - WSL / Andrew Nichols
The WRV Outer Banks Pro QS1,000 pres. by Pacifico witnessed an Outer Banks dream during the second day of competition. Everyone in attendance deemed it the best day ever for an East Coast event and it lasted from first light until the sun faded to darkness.
Let the photos from John Ferguson do the talking.
Chris Michalak - WSL / John Ferguson
Round One surfers like Australia's Chris Michalak were lucky enough to surf three different times if they kept making their heats -- which he did with three near-perfect scores throughout the day including this 9.93's miraculous exit.
Dustin Richardson - WSL / John Ferguson
Under the pseudonym "Johnny Tsunami" after a registration issue, Dustin Richardson represented the name to a tee and had everyone around the event in great spirits with his big smile and crazy barrel performances all day long. This gem earned him a near-perfect 9.37 in his last heat of the day.
Tomas King - WSL / John Ferguson
Costa Rica's Tomas King scored the day's only Perfect 10 amid the countless 9-point rides scored after re-emerging from the darkness of this one.
Kade Matson - WSL / John Ferguson
Even the groms, like 15-year-old Kade Matson (above) and 17-year-old Jacob Burke (below), got in on the action by throwing themselves over the ledge of some hefty ones.
Jacob Burke - WSL / John Ferguson
Dane Mackie - WSL / John Ferguson
Burke's fellow Barbadian Dane Mackie contender was in barrel heaven, along with his goofyfoot brethren, with the freight train lefts streaming through.
Gabriel Farias - WSL / John Ferguson
But, it was Gabriel Farias who showed his prowess in both the epic conditions and smaller finals day swell to become the first-ever WRV Outer Banks Pro winner from outside the North American region.
Thank You Outer Banks!
