The Whalebone Classic WSL Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) event is set to kick off at Isolators Reef in Cottesloe, Perth. The event is celebrating its 20th anniversary and will see some of the world's most talented longboard riders duel it out for a spot at on the World Surf League Longboard Championship Tour (LCT).
The top seed for the Men's LQS event this year is New South Welshman Jack Entwistle who will no doubt be looking to solidify himself a spot in the upcoming LCT event in Taiwan this November.

"I'm feeling good in the lead up to the Whalebone," Entwistle said. "I've competed in the event for the past few years and as always is a super fun weekend with such good a good atmosphere. I'm looking to get a solid result here to help me re-qualify and keep my spot on the World Longboard Championship Tour."
Local surfer Scott Trew has had success in the local divisions at the Whalebone in the past, and has already taken out the title of West Australian State Longboarding Champion in 2017. The talented goofy-footer is relishing the opportunity to continue his stellar year with a solid performance at the WSL level this weekend.

"I'm really looking forward to the event and surfing against the East Coast guys coming over," Trew said. "I honestly don't worry about the conditions too much before an event, the waves are the same for everyone so I just try to get out there and enjoy it. Everyone in the LQS division surfs extremely well that anyone could win the event, but I'd love to see a WA guy get up and get their name on the trophy this year."
Regardless of results, it is a testament to the West Australian surfing community to see that the Whalebone Classic is being run for the 20th straight year, a sentiment held strongly by Surfing WA's Justin Majekes.

"Surfing WA is thrilled to see this iconic and much loved event to life for it's 20th installment," Majeks said. "The Whalebone Longboard Classic has been a vital thread in the fabric of the WA longboarding community for many years and it's great to see some of Australia's best here competing."
With harsh weather abetting over the weekend, competitors will be tested in all conditions from wild to mild at Isolators Reef.

"The forecast is going to be a bit of a mixed bag, but that is typical for this time of year in Western Australia," Majecs continued. "Friday will see a building swell with strong onshore winds, before classic longboard conditions prevail over the weekend, with clean offshore winds and a fun size swell."
