The Beautiful Cloud 9 Sunrise - WSL / Bennett
The Siargao International Women's Surfing Cup is set to begin at the world famous Cloud 9 surfing break on the beautiful island of Siargao in the Philippines this week.
The field of international and local competitors have arrived and have been immensely impressed with the ideal location and its waves. The international women have been enjoying the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the world class waves at Cloud 9 and are excited for competition to get underway this week.
Today's opening ceremony saw the attendance of many important government officials who expressed their enthusiasm for this the first ever all women's World Surf League sanctioned event to take place in the Phillipines.

Mayor Jamie Rusillion, a man of great vision who is described as the father of surfing in the Philippines, has been an enormous supporter of surfing in this region. Mayor Russilion addressed the surfers and large crowd expressing his enthusiasm for this event and in particular it's relevance to empowering women to take to the waves in The Philippines.Â
One interesting international surfer lining up in the event is Lee-Ann Curren from France. Lee Ann is a former full-time competitive surfer who has enjoyed a break from high level competition the past few years to pursue her music.

"I am aiming to surf quite a few events now and this is a wonderful location to begin," Curren said. "The wave seems really quality and I think we are all excited to surf the coming few days with a good forecast - It's exciting for us all."
WSL Asia Events Manager Steve Robertson commented on the event by saying
"WSL have enjoyed great events here at Cloud 9 for around 20 years and we all love coming back here," Robertson said. The Philippine organisers should be commended for running a women's event here at such a great wave. It sets a fine example to the local women surfers and encourages all the women in the region to take to the surf. Like the previous men's events, I'm sure we'll see the locals challenging for the win in this event in the years to come - maybe even this year."
There is an excellent forecast for the event in the coming days which should make for incredible action throughout the event window.
