Shane Dorian (Kona, Hawaii, USA) is undeterred by the canceling of the Eddie contest on Oahu and instead flies to Maui and intercepts the tube of the day at Jaws on February 10, 2016. Video by Shanti Berg. An entry in the Billabong Ride of the Year category of the 2016 WSL Big Wave Awards.
The predicted swell charging toward Hawaii swung a little too wide Wednesday for wave heights at Waimea Bay to reach the standards of the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau event. But all was not lost. The swell angle lit up neighboring Maui, and produced another gem of day at Jaws.
After a close examination of the weather reports, Albee Layer gambled that the Eddie wouldn't go, and chose to stay on Maui. It was the right call, but unfortunately later in the day he was hospitalized after cartwheeling down the face of this wave. Fortunately, Albee reports he's going to be fine.
