Some of the world's best surfers are set to call Avoca home this week as they gear up to contest the inaugural Central Coast Pro World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 1000 event from the 9th - 12th February.
The elite four-day WSL Qualifying Series (QS) 1000 event will run from 9th - 12th February, with the Subway Surf Series Pro Junior occupying the following weekend. The QS event will form the third of four stops on the recently announced NSW Pro Surf Series.
Nearly 200 of Australia's and the world's most promising male and female surfers will compete in the QS event, while a further 88 will compete in the Pro Junior.
Current WSL World Championship Tour (WCT) surfer and local Avoca resident Adrian Buchan (AUS) is over-the-moon to be competing on home turf.
"It's such a nice feeling to be staying at home and competing on the beach I grew up surfing," said Buchan. "This is one of the first professional events I've done in Avoca since the Billabong Pro Junior Series over a decade ago. I think an event like this will give the up-and-coming surfers from around the Central Coast the perfect platform to show the world their talent."
Buchan will be joined in the draw by fellow local and WSL WCT surfer Matt Wilkinson (AUS), local and 2015 Haleiwa Pro champion Wade Carmichael (AUS) and former WCT surfer Nathan Hedge (AUS).
Mayor of Gosford City, Lawrie McKinna said hosting world-class events, the Central Coast Pro and Subway Surf Series Pro Junior competitions, undeniably puts Gosford on the map and brings unbridled benefits for the entire community.
"The people of Gosford City are thrilled to be staging a sporting event of this calibre in our local community," said McKinna. "Not to mention it gives us the opportunity to showcase the depth and breadth of our local surfing talent, featuring several professional surfing stars in their home environment."
Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch echoed similar sentiments in August when the NSW Pro Surf Series launched at Avoca.
"The NSW Pro Surf Series is a fantastic initiative, and I can't wait to see some of the world's top surfers come to Avoca Beach in 2016 to compete. It will also provide a great boost to our local visitor economy, and show the world the beautiful beaches we have here on the Central Coast."
All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.
