Walsh and Callaghan win the Subway Pro Junior Gold Coast

Kael Walsh (AUS) and Macy Callaghan (AUS) have taken out the top spots at the Subway Pro Junior Gold Coast, the first event of the 2016 Subway Surf Series. The final day was held in on-shore, 2 foot waves and at Duranbah Beach.

In a draw stacked full of talent it was Walsh and Lucas Wrice (AUS) who found them selves in the Final. It was a busy heat, the two surfers went wave-for-wave, but after Walsh posted an 8.00 point ride (out of a possible 10) early in the heat with a number of smooth hacks, Wrice was unable to overcome his good friend.

"It's so good to make the final with one of my best mates," Walsh said. "All the Quiksilver crew came down so it was cool to have some support on the beach. The waves were tough, but I was lucky enough to find a couple I could score on. It's good to start the year with a win and has me amped for the next event at home in Margret River."

Wrice was one of the most exciting surfers to watch at the event, landing numerous Aerial manoeuvres in each of his heats. He was unable to repeat this in the final but nonetheless was happy to be there.

"I had a lot of fun at this event," Wrice said. "I had fun waves the whole time, just not so much in the final which was unfortunate. I aimed to get to the final so I'm glad I achieved that goal."

Callaghan continued her dominating form in the Final where she met Vittoria Farmer (AUS). Callaghan displayed serious commitment and power through her turns, which she was rewarded for with the judges scoring her an 8.00 and a 9.00 ride. Farmer was left needing a 9.50 ride from early on in the heat a score she was unable to post leaving Callaghan out in front when the final siren blew.

"I'm really stoked to start the year off with a win," Callaghan said. "I was really nervous for the Final because I knew how good Vittoria has been surfing. The waves were getting a bit better before the final so it was getting easier to post a decent score. I'm really happy and hope I can continue this into the next few events."

Farmer was gracious in defeat and now looks forward to her next Subway Surf Series Pro Junior event.

"I was really happy to make the final," Farmer said. "This is the biggest final I've been in so I'm stoked to have made it this far, especially starting the year off this way. I never expected to make it to the Final, the field is really tough and all the girls rip, but to be out there with Macy was really cool, I had a lot of fun out there."
