Dirty Heads: Behind Moche Rip Curl Pro's Music

If life had a soundtrack who'd be playing yours? Southern California's Dirty Heads have been headlining Stop No. 10 on the Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour (CT), the Moche Rip Curl Pro. Their songs, infused with a reggae and punk influences, have been serving as a backdrop for the event highlights. The band's percussionist, Jon Olazabal, is also a surfer and pro surfing fan and offered some insights into how the band's roots and soul have a little bit of everything he loves.
PL: When did you start?
Jon Olazabal: I started when I was 10 or 12. Then Jared [Watson, lead vocalist] and I both went to Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Calif., and we were on the surf team. That's really when we started hanging out.
PL: What kind of music do you listen to before you paddle out?
JO: I listen to Minor Threat, Fugazi and a bunch of other dirty punk stuff. It's kind of funny because I was just going through some of that old music with a friend of mine and it really brought me back to those freezing mornings where we would just blast that music to get pumped up.
PL: Does surfing influence your music?
JO: From an early age we were that group of kids that got dropped off at the water in the morning and were bumming quarters in the afternoon and then got picked up at night. The beach and the ocean always comes through in our music. It's how it's always been.
PL: Who's your favorite surfer to watch on Tour?
JO: I've always been a big Mick Fanning guy. I feel like he represents this sort of old-school power-surfing. He's just solid and fun to watch. Of course, me and the guys are always pulling for Brett [Simpson]. He's a Huntington boy. We were so stoked watching him beat [Kelly] Slater in Portugal.
PL: What does it mean to have your music as the backdrop to those highlights?
JO: We're stoked to be doing this. This is the only thing I massively follow. It's my only sport. It's my football.
