Tour rookie Italo Ferreira (BRA) was lagging behind reigning World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) for most of their Quarterfinal faceoff. But then he pulled into a rare tube in tough conditions, battling back into the heat with a 9.67. He went on to win and head to Semifinals.
Local replacement surfer Frederico Morais (PRT), who had been wowing the crowd all day (and eliminating World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS) in the process) continued to impress, scoring a 9.13 for a big barrel at the start of his Round 4 heat.
