Tyler Wright (AUS) won the Roxy Pro France for the second consecutive year, defeating Tour rookie Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), who was surfing in her first elite Final. Gabriel Medina (BRA) has won the Quiksilver Pro France, taking down Bede Durbidge (AUS). Neither Wright nor Medina has had a stellar season so far, but both seemed to find their footing in France: Wright ripped apart Culs Nuls with signature power, while Medina threw huge airs and earned two perfect scores before it was all over.
Gabriel Medina finds a deep pit and some room for his classic cutbacks for a perfect 10 in the Quik Pro France Semis.
Competitors arrived at the beach Thursday to pumping waves and chilly weather. But things would get even chillier for some as World Title contenders went down to event standouts, who capitalized on momentum in the solid surf. Among the men, World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS) and World No. 4 Owen Wright (AUS) were eliminated in the Quarterfinals by Durbidge and Adriano de Souza (BRA). Medina, who scored his second 10-point ride of the event, stalled No. 2 De Souza in his efforts to snag the Jeep rankings lead (and the yellow jersey) by eliminating him in the Semis.
Tyler Wright discusses what it feels like to find her first victory in an otherwise challenging season and who has helped her along the way.
In the women's contest, Carissa Moore (HAW) surged ahead again to take the women's Jeep rankings lead, but was eliminated in the Semifinals by Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) as she powered her way to the first Final of her rookie season.
Superheat Fallout: (Read the backstory) Gabriel Medina (BRA) came out strong, establishing a solid scoreline, while Florence was out of sync. When the final horn went off, Florence was comboed (needing two new scores to catch up).
Going into the Finals, the four remaining competitors had tallied nine rides in the nine-point range and three perfect 10s. They were, undoubtedly, the most in-form surfers through each round, momentum proving to be the deciding factor this year at Hossegor.
Gabriel Medina continued to be on fire in the water in the Quiksilver Pro France Final.
Both Final heats were lopsided: Wright surged ahead of Weston-Webb early on, leaving her in the proverbial dust as she made the most of power and unpredictability that define the French beachbreak. Weston-Webb scored an 8.30 at the very end, but it was too little, too late. Like Wright, Medina surfed circles around Durbidge, in form and on fire from the start. He earned a 9.00 and an 8.50 for a victory lap air at the very end.
Gabriel Medina's excitement was contagious following his win at the 2015 Quiksilver Pro France.
Both he and Wright scored much-needed points on the rankings, boosting their ranks but also likely their confidence, too, showing anything's possible in every heat.
The Roxy Pro France concludes the women's European leg, but don't miss Medina continue his momentum at the Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal LIVE on the World Surf League beginning October 20.
