Despite chilly conditions off the coast of Guincho Beach, the women's Championship Tour (CT) Hawaiians owned the first day of the Cascais Women's Pro, going 4-for-5 through the first two rounds of competition.
Watch as Lakey Peterson, Tatiana Weston-Webb and Alessa Quizon kick off competition in Portugal.
Three of the five Hawaiians advanced directly into Round 3, though to be fair Tatiana Weston-Webb came second only to fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon. Quizon's Round 1 victory was her first heat win on the 2015 season, breathing a sigh of relief after ousting World No. 5 Lakey Peterson (USA) and Weston-Webb. Both Weston-Webb and Peterson won their Round 2 heats.
Carissa Moore, Hawaii's best chance for a World Title in 2015 currently holding the No. 1 position, looked unfazed by the pressure that comes with regaining the Jeep Leader yellow jersey at the Swatch Women's Pro. She hacked her way to a dominant Round 1 victory over Silvana Lima (BRA) and local wildcard Teresa Bonvalot.
World No. 2 Courtney Conlogue went left for one big maneuver and goes into the excellent range.
Clawing at her heels is Courtney Conlogue (USA), who relinquished the yellow jersey at Trestles and will need to win in Portugal to earn it back. With one of the highest heat totals of the day -- a 15.00 -- during Round 1, she took a step in the right direction.
"I watched what the judges were rewarding and really went for it as much as I could on one big turn," said Conlogue. "Conditions are tough out there so you really have to maximize your opportunities."
Another standout on Day 1 was Australian Tyler Wright, who put up the highest two-wave total with a 16.00. Despite an exhausting exercise duck-diving the incoming swell, Wright put two big scores -- one excellent range 8.33 -- off the bat to eliminate Sage Erickson (USA) and avoid early elimination.
The remaining competitors at the Cascais Women's Pro will contest non-elimination Round 3 when the event resumes. Watch LIVE on the WSL homepage or the WSL app.
