Mignot Blows Up Day 1 in Lanzarote

The Teguise 2015 Franito Pro Junior, launched Wednesday in great conditions with three-to-four foot waves peeling down the lefthand pointbreak of San Juan. A Junior Tour 1,0000-level event in the Canary Islands, the opening round of both the men and women's contests were completed on the opening day of the waiting period.
Diego Mignot (FRA) 19, surfed a near-perfect heat to advance into the second round of competition. The powerful, perfectly timed hits of Mignot on some of the best waves of the day saw the young Frenchman collect an incredible 9.93 and a 9.33 in his 25-minute heat.
"That was an insane heat for me," Mignot said. "I had so much fun, the waves were absolutely pumping and I love a good reefbreak, especially on my forehand. If conditions get bigger and better tomorrow it should be incredible. I look forward to surfing more heats out there, everyone's stoked to be here this week and we should see some good surfing."
Leon Glatzer (DEU) 18, mixed power-turns and his signature radical aerials to post two excellent scores himself including an impressive 9.57 for the second highest heat total of the day.
"I love this wave and I'm stoked to make this heat," Glatzer said. "Where I live is a left sort of like that, not as wedgy but it's pretty similar and I'm super happy to end the Junior tour here it's pretty incredible. I've been watching everybody surf this morning and do big turns, and I was trying to mix it up with some airs and it worked out well for me."
Timothee Bisso (GLP) 18, surfed the opening heat of the event, setting the scale with excellent surfing on the long lefthanders of San Juan. The powerful goofyfooter found his rhythm right away to waste to no time in controling his round 1 matchup.
"Conditions are so good," Bisso said. "It's a bit smaller than the previous days but the waves are so fun here, super long lefts there's nothing better for me to perform. I've been surfing here for two days, it's hot and the waves are pumping, so I'm super happy to be here. I made the man-on-man Quarters last year, so my goal is to improve on that and try to win the event."
Carol Henrique (PRT), 20, belted the highest heat total of the women's round 1 with her sharp backhand attack of the long San Juan walls. The talented Portuguese, currently in fifth position on the regional rankings, is in striking distance of the top spots in Lanzarote and will be looking to post a big result this week.
"That was really fun, there were a lot of waves and everyone got their share so that was a good heat," Henrique said. "The priority system on a wave like that is very cool, nobody's hassling out there. I love Canarias, the waves are perfect and I'm having a great time with my friends."
Current rankings top surfers Juliette Brice (FRA) and Teresa Bonvalot (PRT) advanced serenely, making no waves but reassuring they're here to compete for the win in Lanzarote.
Surfers and event officials will reconvene Thursday at 10 a.m. local time for a probable re-start of the men's event.
