The World Surf League (WSL) Men's Qualification Series (QS) returns to Nags Head, NC for the WRV Outer Banks Pro QS1000 presented by Hurley and Pacifico at Jennette's Pier. Michael Dunphy (USA) leads the charge as the defending champion and is looking to find the same form he had in 2014.
The Virginia Beach, VA local boy is excited on returning to Jennette's Pier and ready to make a run in the back half of this year's season. Growing up only two hours from the infamous Outer Banks coastline known for its pumping swell, Dunphy is no stranger to this area and is always a threat at this event.
"Last year was a crazy week and one that I'll never forget," Dunphy said. "I've been coming to the OBX my whole life and it's where I learned to surf better types of waves - it gets world class on its day. I had a tough break at the Vans Pro last week, so it would be good to get back on track here."
Dunphy's feeling comfortable coming back to this event and is set to put a jersey back on. Still sitting in the no.24 spot on the QS Rankings list, he needs all 1,000 points on offer here to help boost him into the Top 20.
"I don't feel any pressure at all for this event," Dunphy said. "I just want to get fun waves and really have a go at getting a good result here. This place is pretty special so I always want to surf my best on this wave and putting on a jersey just makes me want it even more."
The Operations Manager of WRV, LG Shaw, is looking forward to this timeless event - and with the addition of key sponsors on board have made the Outer Banks Pro one for the books.
"WRV is stoked to be able to bring the WSL back to the Outer Banks again this year," Shaw said. "15 years ago this event started as an ASP qualifier event and with the help of returning sponsors Hurley and Pacifico we've been able to keep the event a WSL Men's QS event for a few years now. This year's event is shaping up to have some really contestable waves through the waiting period with hope that the weekend could really turn on."
"Hurley helped us push the prize purse back to $30,000 again this year and Pacifico has helped us to continue to grow the event and bring the WSL back on board," Shaw added. "With all our other great sponsors it's easy to see why this is such a popular event for both athletes and spectators alike."
Following a solid runner-up finish last week in Virginia Beach, Noah Schweizer (USA) is looking to keep it rolling here at the WRV Outer Banks Pro. After pulling double duty in both the Men's and Juniors events, Schweizer only has the Men's QS event here to worry about and is hoping to go one better from last week.
"I had a good run fore sure," Schweizer said. "I do still wish I didn't make a couple of mistakes in the juniors, but overall it is a big confidence booster to get a result like that in the QS. I just wanted to make a few heats so it definitely gives me confidence to know I can beat some of the guys I never expected to."
Hailing from New Smyrna Beach, FL, Schweizer makes the 11-hour drive on a normal basis and enjoys this contest in particular. He stayed busy at the 1st Street Jetty last week, looking for the best waves on offer and is something he wants to bring here.
"Being a surfer from the east coast, I'm always coming to the Outer Banks," Schweizer said. "I usually do this competition every year but I always try to come up for any hurricane as well - I love surfing out here and when the waves are good nothing really beats it."
The WRV Outer Banks Pro presented by Hurley and Pacifico has a waiting period from August 26th - 30th and will run during the best conditions available during the window. The contest will be broadcast live at www.wrvobxpro.com.
Tomorrow's 7:30am EST Call will decide a possible 8:00am Start.
