The Women's Qualification Series (QS) will make its way to the intimate fishing village of La Libertad, El Salvador for the sixth of seven QS6000 events on the 2015 schedule. The Copa El Salvador Impresionante presented by Body Glove will be held at the world-class, right-hand point break of Punta Roca, playing host to the Women's QS for the first time ever. The tour's heavy-hitters are in town looking for valuable points toward making the 2016 Championship Tour (CT), as well as $40,000.00 in Prize Money.
Current QS rankings leader, Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), is coming into this event with a lot of momentum after winning the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro two weeks ago and is looking forward to the wave Punta Roca has to offer her goofy-foot style. It will be the Hawaiian's first time in El Salvador and she will have her work cut out for her alongside some of the world's best.
"It feels really good to have the top spot on the QS and knowing I have a good chance of requalifying for the CT," Weston-Webb said. "I'm really excited for this event. It's a really good right-hand point break and I'm stoked to display my strong backhand. I've never been to El Salvador before so that just adds to the excitement factor. Every QS is a hard event though so I know I'll have to work twice as hard."
If having momentum and being atop of the leader board aren't enough encouragement, Weston-Webb's main sponsor and support system will be backing this ground-breaking event.
"It's really cool to have Body Glove sponsoring the event," Weston-Webb said. "They've supported me immensely the last two years. They're such a great family and have a really cool history with surfing - they've been around forever, making some of the first wetsuits. To have them as the main sponsor will be really fun because I'm going to have all my friends there and more support."
WSL Women's Tour Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer is excited to see these women get a chance to showcase their talent in an event directed to them. The El Salvador Pro will offer $40,000 in prize money and a chance for some of the world's best to pick apart a world-class wave.
"This is such a great opportunity for these girls to really show what they can do," Miley-Dyer said. "They're all hungry for points to keep their qualification hopes a reality and with this event taking place on the point-break of Punta Roca, it'll be really exciting to watch. I've been wanting to bring more money into this sport for the women and to get them into more events - this contest is a great example of what we're trying to do to progress women's surfing."
Stepping up as the event's major sponsor, Body Glove is looking forward to what this event holds in store for some of the world's best. The company, in its 62nd year, has laid down an impressive trail of innovation since its start and is looking to get involved even more.
"We're thrilled to partner with the WSL and El Salvadorian ministry of tourism to sponsor such a great event for women's surfing," said Body Glove VP of Marketing Scott Daley. "At Body Glove, we've always been big supporters of women's surfing, and as the talent level continues to rise we are looking forward to helping showcase the best female athletes in the sport at such a world class wave. Also, with Rookie Tatiana Weston-Webb on our team, and a brand new women's fitness line we just launched, it's a great time for our own brand and the sport."
