With a win in the Vans US Open of Surfing Quarterfinals, Courtney Conlogue (USA) has moved to the front of the elite women's pack based on the latest points tally. Her new rank, however, won't appear on the Jeep Leaderboard until the contest is complete. She will wear the yellow leader's jersey in the next Championship Tour (CT) event, the Swatch Women's Pro at Lower Trestles.
The window of opportunity opened for Conlogue when Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) eliminated Carissa Moore (HAW) in the Quarterfinals. Buitendag found a tricky lefthander in the final minute of the heat but made the most of it, going vertical on her backhand for the buzzer-beater win.
By the time Conlogue got to the Quarterfinals, she'd already had a big day. Earlier, in Round 4, she survived an intense matchup against Tour rookie Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW). The up-and-comer has made Round 4 in every contest so far this year and had won three of them. But after lagging in the first half of the heat, Conlogue surged ahead with a powerful carves on her backhand for two midrange scores and the heat win.
But that wasn't all. In a rematch of her Round 3 non-elimination heat, Conlogue took on Malia Manuel (HAW) in the Quarterfinals. The Hawaiian continued to max out the waves at Huntington Beach, kicking things off with an excellent-range score (8.00 or above). But Conlogue found an big score of her own and backed it up with a fins-free backhand carve for a 7.83.
