Charly Quivront (FRA) steals the show on Day 1 of the Caparica Primavera Surf Fest powered by O'Neill.
The Caparica Primavera Surf Fest powered by O'Neill officially launched the European season in a fantastic manner with clean 2-to-3 foot waves gracing day one of competition.
The men's field shrunk down to fifty in excellent conditions and under the clear-blue skies of Portugal's spring. Charly Quivront (FRA) 19, stamped his authority on the field, netting two excellent scores including a near-perfect 9.50 for a combination of massive turns.

"That moment of the tide was tricky as we were in between two peaks, the left started dying and the right wasn't great just yet," Quivront analyzed. "I surfed out the back and found really fun waves, my last wave was pretty big and clean and I got the 9.5 with like 3 or 4 carves and a reverse at the end."
Other highlights of the day include Californian junior phenom Kanoa Igarashi (USA) 17, who collected two of the highest heat totals above 17 points.

"I just got here this morning and came straight from the airport into my first heat, so I felt a little jetlagged." Igarashi said. "I'm stoked to be back here, it's one of my favorite places in the world. I have so many friends and it just feels like a second home. Waves were super fun and the weather is just great today!"
France's Lens Arancibia Avila (FRA) 17, went head-to-head with Igarashi in the battle for high scores and found himself an excellent 9.00 point ride in round one.
"This morning the peak was well defined and there was a clean righthander breaking," Arancibia explained. "I got two fun waves and was stoked with my scores."

In the next round it came down to last minute heroics for the young frenchman who almost exited the competition early. In an attempt to separate from the crowds, the talented goofyfooter paddled over to the next peak and found a good right again to net the score he needed to advance.
"I started with everyone on the left along the pier, but couldn't really finish my waves," Arancibia continued. "I needed a score with a couple minutes remaining and I decided to paddle over when I saw that set approaching, luckily for me one of the waves let me do a couple maneuvers and that was enough."
Portuguese perennial threat on the Junior series Miguel Blanco (PRT) 19, opened the show in Round 2 announcing the top seeds taking over proceedings in the afternoon. His powerful and stylish approach was spot-on and rewarded with solid scores.
"I felt great in the water, it's so good to be back surfing on the Junior series and especially starting here at home in Portugal," Blanco said. "I live 20 minutes from here and with this kind of conditions we're always surfing here, so I know the place well. I had a lot of fun out there and I think the scores reflected it."
Organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. to reassess conditions and decide to either continue and finish the men's second round of competition or launch the women's action on Day 2.
