About Amuro Tsuzuki
Amuro Tsuzuki grew up on Sagami Bay in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan. However her hometown’s waves are frequently flat and her parents spent most of her formative years taking the two-hour drive to Chiba, Japan’s surf city.
Tsuzuki’s talent was obvious and from her early teenage years, she enjoyed the cut and thrust of competitive surfing. She was a Japanese standout and provided her international pedigree by winning the World Junior Titles in 2019, aged 18.
That same year the natural footer made more headlines when she was the surprise winner of the ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro, rated as a QS 10,000, which shot her into the top 10 of the QS rankings and so a spot on the CT.
In 2021 she made history when she became the first female Japanese surfer in 20 years to win a CT heat. That victory came at Margaret River, where the 5’3”, 55 kilogram pocket rocket took to the huge Main Break waves with a fearless, and radical, approach.
She then took that form into the 2021 ISA World Surfing Games and earned a spot for the host nation at the Tokyo Olympic Games, to be held at Chiba, the beach where she learned to surf. It was another huge step for a surfer that has ambitions to go all the way in the sport.
“My biggest dream is to be a World Champion,” she told the WSL. “It has always been my dream, and I will do everything that I can to be the first Japanese female to win a World Title.”
